DVDShrink Won't start

Postby cretauk » Mon Jun 20, 2011 6:26 am

I have Windows 7 Ult 64. Not sure what the problem is exactly b/c it gives me no errors. I double click the icon and nothing comes up I notice when I have task manager up when I do it it pops 2 dllhost.exe things up but then they drop. I've tried the compatibility stuff and I get the same effect. Even used them with the admin permission and have gotten nothing. If anyone can offer ideas please do.

DVDShrink Won't start - Upgrade Win7

Postby EmmGeeImage » Mon Sep 26, 2011 1:22 pm

Here's one possibility..... I found this out and was never told of such a thing... When consulting a PC pro, they wanted me to buy a 700 dollar PC with XP on it... until I got a 2nd opinion.

There is a 90 dollar upgrade that Microsoft has. It's the "XP mode." You can get to it in the start menu---> Windows anytime upgrade. To run it, you will need a passcode, which windows sends in an email...after you pay for it.

I'm suspecting that you are on the lowest form of Win7. I had issues with many programs not installing or if they installed, would not run in Win 7. This (DVD Shrink) ran in XP mode just fine.. since it was written for Win XP, not Win 7.

THIS UPGRADE DOES NOT COME WITH SOME WINDOWS PLATFORMS, SUCH AS WIN 7 HOME VERSION. YOU MUST UPGRADE TO USE THE OLDER PROGRAMS. MANY PROGRAM WRITERS KNEW OF THIS NEW PROGRAMMING COMPATIBILITY IN WINDOWS 7, BUT IGNORED IT... HENCE THE UPGRADE.- IN WIN7. THIS IS WHY IT WON'T WORK, ALONG WITH MANY OTHER XP OR EARLIER PROGRAMS.

Also, make sure you are up to date on all your drivers and windows updates.

This "Win XP mode" upgrade worked for me... not only on this issue, but on other older programs too.

EmmGeeImage,

Thanks for your suggestion but I am running Windows 7 Ultimate not the basic version. Therefore my software contains the "Win XP" feature although I haven't been ale to launch it!

Strangely DVD Shrink runs on my laptop which uses Windows 7 Home Premium! On both computers I am using DVD Shrink in tandem with Nero 7.

Any other thoughts?

Windows 7's XP Mode may not work on many PCs
CPUs in even recent PCs, especially netbooks, lack needed hardware virtualization support

That may assist some. It's from PC World Magazine. Just a thought.

I'll add my support to spyware/malware argument, and agree with the previous poster on downloading/updating and doing a scan with SpyBot. I'll bet that you'll find a *beep* of 'red' stuff.
