Where is the ISO image?

Postby swampwizard52 » Sun Mar 06, 2011 3:38 pm

Hello, I've been useing DVD Shrink with Windows XP for years with no problem. My problem started when I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro. Maybe I've not created the correct output folder. It should be going to C:\\. Shrink says that it has created a ISO image but I can't find it. Is there a guide for setting Shrink with W7? I do know that the DVD was ripped correctly. I'm sure I'm overlooking something simple. Please help and thanks. :( :?:

First make your own folder "movies" on c:\ or elsewhere then select it as output folder. Shrink should write to it just fine.

I have the same problem now. DVDShrink won't creat .ISO file or VIDOE_TS folder anymore even if there is an existing folder for them. It did earlier but now something has happened. I have used DVDFab to decrypt movie first. Any ideas? (Windows 7)

So what does happen when you click backup? Does Shrink start encoding? If it does use the search to find where the ISO has been written to.

It starts encoding normally and works fine. When it's done Shrink tells that backup was succesful and files are stored the folder where they should be. But in that folder there is nothing and also Windows search can't find the files anywhere.

That's the weirdest thing. Under Win7 there are some folders one can't write to as well as some virtual folders that actually point to other dirs. However, if you do create your own folder in advance (to be on the safe side preferably not on the system partition) and only then let Shrink output to this folder it should work just fine as it does on my system.

Done that, I made a folder C:/Movie. And in that folder there was nothing. And as I said, earlier (maybe two months ago) it worked fine! And I have also tried to re-install DVDShrink. Do you think the only way now is to re-install Windows? (lot of work :( )

It should be not too much work since you certainly made an image with True Image or a similar tool, right?

I'm not sure it's worth the effort. Granted, it should work on a freshly installed system, however, who's to say it won't happen again? I've googled a bit and apparently you're not the only one having this problem. Thanks for the advice! I tried few of those "tricks" but none of them help in my case.
So I re-installed Win, and now DVDShrink works fine again! There might have been a windows registry error, I don't know...

Rips DVD OK - but output nowhere to be seen!

Postby Jehni » Fri Jul 08, 2011 1:08 pm

This is a weird one... Installed DVD Shrink on the new Windows 7 computer. All looked good, worked exactly as it should. Analysed the DVD, encoded perfectly... but the new folder I'd created on the hdd for the files literally couldn't be found. Searched the entire hdd. THought it was a freakish error so created a NEW directory in Windows explorer and used that for the next disk. What do you know... while DVD Shrink seemed to work perfectly, encoding the disk in about 20 minutes, the place where I'd specified for the files was totally empty.

Does anyone have ANY idea about this???

thank you in advance!

it's amazing how windows 7 screws with almost every open-source facility/program/application/etc i have! i was getting help from an IT professional for a while, but even he admitted there were some old progs that win7 simply would not permit me to even load! there are settings galore in the control panel that claim to permit you to do anything you want, something called DEP? after the IT guy started talking about "work-arounds" and punching code through the firewall, i gave up. but i learned a few things about win7, besides that it's a ball-breaker.

apparently, folder options have taken on security measures that become crucial in being able to access whatever you innocently put in them. you have to establish administrative privilege over everything. how to do that would involve me going back into that whirlpool of crud, and honestly? i dont even remember exactly what i did, but it worked. i no longer had that popup telling me i needed to be the boss to open a folder i had just created!

if you do some digging, you'll find what i'm referring to, and all your problems with missing files/folders will magically disappear, after just a few clicks in the right places.

SOLUTION- Where is the ISO image?

Postby Swazzy492 » Sat Jul 23, 2011 3:26 am

I am sorry for the long explanation, but I think it covers and explains everything you need to know.

Right, I have the solution. I have needed to do this I think every time I create an iso image.
What you need is a FREEWARE program called Locate32. It has its own website, so it is easy enough to find.

When it has been installed, you will need to "Update Database". What this does is locates everything in the computer.
This is done by 'File-Update Databases'.
A % reading will show on-screen.

When it is done updating (YOU MUST ALLOW THIS TO FINISH OR THE PROGRAM WILL CRASH), type the title of the iso you are looking for in the "Named" box, but without the extension (eg if it is titled "myholiday.iso", type "myholiday" (without quotes)).
In the "Extenstions" box, put "iso" (no quotes, no dot).

Now comes the tricky bit.
The box down the bottom that shows located files will likely show TWO files of the same name, but in different locations. One will be where you wanted it to go (I will assume this is C: but you can apply this to your own situation), the other will look similar to this "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore". USERNAME is the name of your logon, so it would be replaced with the word "Mark" if you log on as Mark.

The file in the C: location is not actually there. It will open, but if you try cut/paste it, it will not work. The file in the other location is it's place. you can "right-click, open containing folder", and it will be highlighted in said folder.

Move it to the desktop.

It should become visible on the desktop now, and you are free to use it however you intended to.

Once it has been moved to the desktop, I recommend updating the database again, because it does not do this automatically. If you were to search the same file again, it would show you exactly what it did the first time, because it assumes it is still there.

STUFF YOU WANT TO KNOW

You may be concerned that because it is listed in two locations, it may be consuming twice as much space. It is not, the listing in C: is some sort of invisible shortcut to the actual file. Once you move the file to the desktop, the shortcut in C: will disappear.

This program does tend to crash often, but I have yet to find another program that is as easy or functional as this.

During installation, a shortcut may be placed on the desktop called "Updtdb32". This updates the database inside the cmd box. It is just a non-gui way of updating the database.

Possible, however that should not interfere with folders you create yourself, even on C:\. I haven't turned off UAC and still can find and handle all files generated by Shrink on a default Win7 installation.

So why not output from Shrink to "My Videos" right away? This is one of the user's folders and therefore you can write to it.
Also, any file finder tool - heck even the Win7 search - will list you these files. There's no need to specifically install locate32, it simply speeds up searching by indexing all files in advance. There are even faster tools that just check the NTFS file index instead of scanning the whole disk.

I've been screwin around with this problem for a while and just got it figured out. Hopefully this works for everyone. My antivirus(Avast) was apparently blocking DVDShrink and just never bothered to tell me so try "allowing" or "ignoring" the DVDShrink.exe with your antivirus. Mine started when I moved and regained internet connection(I assume Avast updated and decided DVDShrink was malware or somethin) so I'd expect this problem could crop up seemingly instantaneously. Hope it helps!!!
